Rain and flooded sidewalks greeted Cal State Fullerton students today for the start of the Spring 2012 semester.

Letty Tinajero a communications student said “driving to campus took me 38 minutes from my home.  I actually got to campus at 9 to be here for my class at 11. The rain just makes everything harder.

Math major Simone Simon added, “I was really lucky because I didn’t have to walk here or drive…my roommate dropped me off.  The only downer is that I’m part of a Christian Club and we usually have Bible talks on the first day back,  just encouraging people to come out to church. But we couldn’t today, too much rain.”

Third year music student Ryan Clippinger worked at an info booth to help guide students to classes and said, to his knowledge, it has never rained like this on the first day back. “We saw way less people this time…I think people are just trying to avoid being outside in general,” he said.

Working alongside Clippinger in the booth was Laura Neal, a Career Center Industry Specialist for Arts, Entertainment and Communication.  She noted, “In my ten years of working for the university and hosting the info booths, I’ve never really seen this kind of rain.  We’re usually pretty fortunate… this rain is pretty rare.”

For German exchange student Ali Kaplan, the weather was a surprise. “This is my only semester here and I arrived two weeks ago to study mechanical engineering.  In Germany the weather is very cold and there is a lot of rain, so I was surprised to come to California and see this cold side of America,” he said.
