HomeAid-GirlsHope
Thirteen years after its original dedication, the girls’ home for Boys Hope Girls Hope, located in Fullerton, was rededicated June 17 after receiving a long overdue facelift.

The ceremony held at the house hosted several participants from HomeAid Orange County and the Orange County chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. The two organizations teamed up to renovate the interior of the house, which six teenage girls call home.

Boys Hope Girls Hope is a non-profit agency that provides a family-style, non-institutional home environment for at-risk children who are academically capable and show great promise.

City Council meeting, June 15, 2010

BY DBARBER | June 17, 2010

Tuesday night’s city council meeting was derailed by old business as crowds in the chamber waited impatiently for the last agenda item—final approval of the city’s controversial budget.

Despite the decisive vote at the June 1st meeting, West Coyote HIlls dominated the discussion when one resident said none of the council members gave sufficient reasons for voting against the development. The resident asked that the issue be removed from the consent calendar and discussed as a separate agenda item.

Consent calendar items are routine matters that can be acted upon in a single vote, thus shortening council meetings. The West Coyote Hills decision was on the list because the city had yet to formally adopt the resolution denying Chevron’s development plan.

What followed were several long explanations from council members Shawn Nelson, Sharon Quirk-Silva and Pam Keller, who said they had been discussing the issue for years and that they had indeed cited many reasons for their vote, many times. There was general annoyance expressed by many in the room that the issue was being raised again.

Keller finally took issue with the matter, pointing out that the council was still on the third item of nineteen on the consent calendar. By the time the Coyote Hills discussion had finished, and the denial resolution was formally adopted, two hours had passed.  The heart of the meeting—final vote on the budget—was still a long way off.

By the end of the meeting, though, the budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1, was approved. Additional layoffs of city personnel were avoided, according to Sylvia Palmer, the city’s public information officer.

In other action, Joel Felz, assistant city manager and director of parks and recreation, was named acting city manager. Felz’s appointment becomes final on Dec. 31, following a six-month trial period, when acting city manager Chris Meyer will retire.

In addition, Al Zelinka, the city’s planning manager, was named director of the community development department by Meyer. That appointment was effective June 12.  Zelinka replaces John Godlewski, who has retired.

Zombie Pub Crawl

Zombie Pub Crawl
Downtown Fullerton was invaded Saturday by a horde of over 60 zombies, displaying bloody wounds and ashen faces, shambling through the streets calling for “BRAAAINS!” and “BEEEEER!”

The outbreak was staged by Jim Monte and Jordan Craig, the masterminds behind ZombiePubCrawls.com. Why zombies? “Pub Crawls are interesting, but boring,” said Monte, “If you are going to mob an area, might as well do it with some style!”

The pair chose Downtown Fullerton for their first large-scale event because of its old town atmosphere and young crowds, whom they hope to recruit for future crawls. “We also love the proximity of the bars, restaurants and college campuses,” said Craig.

“I graduated from Cal State Fullerton and thought it fitting to start the first official Zombie Pub Crawl here in Downtown Fullerton, especially after so many nights of figuratively leaving the area like a zombie. This time we arrived in appropriate attire,” said Monte.

To ensure a thorough effect, professional make up artists were hired to complete the zombie transformation.
