Council Hearing on Coyote Hills
BY DBARBER | May 25, 2010After years of protests and grass-roots efforts by conservationists, Chevron’s West Coyote Hills development plan was rejected Tuesday night by the city council, 3-2. Chevron may opt to submit a different plan in the future, but for now, the 510-acre development will not proceed.
Crowds filled the chamber and the lobby outside as the council heard arguments from plan proponents, including numerous residents and community leaders. Opponents of the project, many of whom wore yellow buttons, and carried signs with “Save Coyote Hills” printed on them, also addressed the council.
During the meeting city staff presented final plans and outlined unresolved issues. That was followed by questions from council members seeking to clarify specific areas of concern, such as water supply, what constitutes open space and future access to oil reserves.
Council member Shawn Nelson expressed concern about water rights and how future residents may be billed, as well as other provisions in the contract agreement with Chevron and builder Pacific Coast Homes.

Library Groundbreaking
BY DBARBER | May 18, 2010Tuesday, May 18, 2010. For a brief moment Tuesday, the city council didn’t have budget cuts to discuss. Instead, before their meeting, groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the Main LIbrary next to City Hall.
Officially, library expansion is now underway. Construction is expected to take about a year and it will add 6,000 square feet to the facility. New features include a new community room, a kitchen and coffee area, storage facilities and more.
The library will remain open as the project moves forward, though many areas may be affected on a short term basis. You can track construction progress on the library’s web site.
